Job Description

PURPOSE OF POSITION: Provide the full range of respiratory care services including cardiac diagnostics to adult, pediatric and infants.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Evaluate and assess patients in need of respiratory care and communicate findings and recommendations to the physicians.

Perform routine respiratory care including the use of intermittent positive pressure breathing, aerosolized medication delivery, chest physiotherapy, oxygen and aerosol therapy, peak flow monitoring, sputum induction and emergency care.

Monitor and manage patients on invasive and non-invasive mechanical ventilation. Initiate mechanical ventilation, make appropriate adjustment, wean, withdraw life support and extubation.

Set up, clean, maintain and troubleshoot respiratory care equipment.

Properly document all care provided in the medical record.

Perform arterial and capillary (if trained) punctures. Analyze blood for results and notify physicians when blood gas results are abnormal or change in treatment is indicated.

Perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation as required. Control the airway and ventilation of patients during cardiopulmonary resuscitation: May perform endotracheal intubation to establish an airway.

Educate patients on respiratory disease processes and management.

Ensure all safety equipment is readily available throughout the hospital e.g., adequate portable oxygen, suction, bag/masks, intubation equipment.

Perform pulmonary function testing and routine electrocardiography and cardiac stress testing.

Provide resuscitation according to NALS guidelines during newborn deliveries.

Charge appropriately for respiratory procedures performed.

Maintain cooperative working relationship with hospital staff, patients, other organizations, and the public to provide quality customer service in a courteous manner.

Maintain work areas in a clean, orderly and secure manner. 

Follow all safety rules and procedures for work areas. 

Collects data and participates in quality assurance activities as directed. 

Assists in scheduling patients for diagnostic tests and obtaining pre-authorizations from insurance companies as needed.

AUXILIARY JOB FUNCTIONS: Provide assistance to other hospital personnel as workload and staffing levels dictate.  Maintain proficiency by attending training and meetings, reading materials, and meeting with others in areas of responsibility. 

JOB QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

MANDATORY REQUIREMENTS: Broad knowledge of age appropriate respiratory care, principles of growth and development over the life span, and, data assessment and interpretation to identify requirements. Knowledge of respiratory care equipment usage and maintenance, and computer applications software.  Completion of Respiratory Care Program from an AMA accredited college or university, or any satisfactory combination of experience and training which demonstrates the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the above duties.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS/LICENSES: Possession of Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP) credential from National Board of Respiratory Care.  Possession of RCP license issued by the State of Oregon, or ability to acquire by time of appointment.  Possession of current Basic Life Support card.  In order to meet the requirements mandated by the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act of 1988, Sec. 493.1423, documentation including diploma copy or official transcript of highest academic achievement must be provided at time of hire.

DESIRABLE REQUIREMENTS: Possession of Registered Respiratory Therapist credential, neonatal resuscitation certificate, Pediatric Advanced Life Support and Advanced Cardiac Life Support cards.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS OF POSITION: While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently required to sit, stand, bend, kneel, stoop, communicate, reach and manipulate objects.  The position requires mobility.  Duties involve moving materials weighing up to 5 pounds on a regular basis, and may infrequently require moving materials patients with others or mechanical assistance.  Manual dexterity and coordination are required over 50% of the work period while operating respiratory care equipment, computer keyboard and standard office equipment. 

WORKING CONDITIONS: Usual hospital working environment.  Most duties are conducted in the Respiratory Care office however some duties will take place in patient, operating, and deliver rooms. The noise level in the office work area is typical of most hospital environments with telephones and equipment noises, personal interruptions, and background noises. 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Supervision is not a typical responsibility assigned to this position.  May provide training and orientation to newly appointed employees, students or volunteers.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Works under the direction of the Respiratory Therapy Manager.
