PURPOSE OF POSITION: Perform a variety of laboratory procedures to examine and analyze body fluids, tissues, and cells; analyze chemical content of fluids; perform blood bank type and screens and cross match blood. Test for drug levels in the blood to show how a patient is responding to treatment. Use and maintain automated equipment and instruments used in performing tests, as well as microscopes, cell counters, and other equipment. Perform quality control daily and maintain proper documentation. Able to perform basic troubleshooting functions on analyzers. Able to recognize adulterated specimens and determine acceptability for testing.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Read and follow all Standard Operating Procedures of the Laboratory.
Follow all applicable rules and regulations pertaining to the hospital laboratory environment and patient care areas of the hospital. This includes following OSHA mandates for work safety, State of Oregon Health Division policies, CLIA policies and procedures, AABB standards, and the policies of any other regulatory body when notified.
Maintain absolute confidentiality concerning patient information.
Performance of Phlebotomy using proper aseptic technique on all age groups of patients.
Utilize the LIS system to order, result, and retrieve laboratory results.
Process specimens and send-out testing when necessary.
Perform waived, low complexity, moderate complexity, and high complexity lab testing on a variety of computer-based analyzers and using established manual methods as trained.
Maintain performance and documentation of control procedures as directed.
Perform preventive maintenance and calibrate instruments. Take inventory as scheduled or requested.
Prepare media solutions and reagents for use in the laboratory, and dispose of contaminated material in a safe manner.
Maintain records and prepare reports.
Maintain work areas in a clean, orderly and secure manner.
Maintain cooperative working relationship with hospital staff, patients, other organizations, and the public to provide quality customer service in a courteous manner.
Be available for stand-by and on-call duty when scheduled.
MANDATORY REQUIREMENTS: Completion of a Bachelor’s degree in medical technology. Current certification with ASCP or AMT, or qualify for grandfather exemption under current CLIA ruling for certification maintenance (graduated prior to 2006) or qualify as a medical technologist under CLIA ’88 ruling. Application in process for certification with ASCP or AMT, post graduating from a licensed program in medical technology, not to exceed six months in the process to achieve certification.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS/LICENSES: Possession of current Medical Technologist certification with AMT or ASCP. In order to meet the requirements mandated by the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act of 1988, Sec. 493.1423, documentation including diploma copy or official transcript of highest academic achievement must be provided at time of hire.
DESIRABLE REQUIREMENTS: Experience in a hospital laboratory.
