  • Job Description

    To establish payment arrangements on self-pay accounts, implement collection policies and procedures on all accounts, assist patients in understanding payment options and, after all efforts to collect have been made, turning delinquent accounts over to outside agencies.

    Conduct interviews with patients and/or their representatives to obtain necessary financial information to analyze their ability to pay. Make appropriate referrals and educate patients on eligibility for financial assistance programs, i.e. HDH Financial Assistance or Hospital Presumptive Eligibility (HPE) through Oregon Medicaid Program.

    Provide financial, insurance and payment information to patients and assist them in resolving patient account balances within Paragon and Epic for both hospital and clinic patients.

    Establish payment arrangements with patients that have a balance in accordance with established financial policies and procedures. Evaluate unpaid accounts and determine which accounts within Paragon and Epic (hospital and clinic patients) should be sent to a collection agency.  Follow financial policies and consult with Revenue Cycle Manager when further clarification is needed. 

    Make contact with patients to discuss delinquent payments within Paragon and Epic (hospital and clinic patients) and getting them back on track.  Send collection notices or letters as appropriate. Investigate mail returns for correct address of patient/guarantor.

    Responsible for working and maintaining Epic workqueues that are assigned by the Revenue Cycle Manager.      

    Maintain informative notes on accounts including patient financial status and all collection efforts in the system. 

    Process all insurance credit card payments and patient payments.

    Handle bankruptcy accounts with Paragon and Epic for both hospital and clinic accounts.

    Track all employee labs as well as infection control labs and submit for adjustment.

    Verify estate information and determine if accounts are payable or uncollectable on deceased patients for both hospital and clinic accounts.

    Collect an ABN for Medicare patients that are admitted to the hospital.

    Maintain cooperative working relationship with staff, patients, other organizations, and the public to provide quality customer service in a courteous manner.

  • Requirements

    MANDATORY REQUIREMENTS: Knowledge of billing and related office procedures and methods, English, grammar, spelling, data entry and retrieval, record keeping, and computer applications software.  General knowledge of confidentiality concepts and requirements.  Ability to communicate effectively with the public, insurance companies, and staff both orally and in writing. Equivalent to a high school education and over one (1) year office experience, or any satisfactory combination of experience and training which demonstrates the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the above duties

    SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS/LICENSES: Hospital Presumptive Eligibility (HPE) Certification.  May obtain within 6 months of hire date.

    DESIRABLE REQUIREMENTS: Previous billing office or patient account experience and previous experience in a medical clinic environment. Knowledge of state and federal Medicaid/Medicare assistance programs. Knowledge of collection law. Basic knowledge of medical terminology and patient care diagnostic codes.
